Comments: The Citadel was build as part of the al-Qahira fortification project by the famous Kurdish warlord Salah ad-Din al-Ayyubi in a bid to protect the city from the Crusaders (XII c.). Complex hosts the most recognizable architectural symbol of Cairo, the Mohammed Ali Mosque.
